Tech giants, major retailers, real estate developers, and other corporate leaders are setting new examples each year by making ample investments in renewable energy. In 2019, these big industry leaders have installed over 1,280 megawatts (MW) of new commercial solar capacity in the United States, a 10% increase from the previous year.
The onsite solar capacity was recorded as 844MW which was primarily driven by expiring incentive programs in several states and recent step-downs in the federal investment tax credit (ITC). The off-site commercial installations were totaled at 441MW.
“The world’s most recognizable brands are walking the walk when it comes to their clean energy commitments,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, President, and CEO of SEIA. “Businesses are choosing solar energy because it can significantly curb their energy costs and add predictability during these uncertain times”.
Apple was the US corporate leader for two consecutive years, followed by Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Google. The tech giant Apple also announced that it aims to have its entire supply chain running on renewable power by 2030 as it unveiled plans to become a 100% net-zero operation.
Another reason for the increased solar use has been the proliferation of explicit renewable energy and carbon goals among the world’s largest companies.
Not irrelevant to mention here that ground-mount systems were accounted for a major portion of installed commercial capacity. However, individual rooftop systems are still more common. Solar carport systems continue to be an attractive proposition for companies without abundant land or suitable roof space.
Looking ahead
So far this year, the coronavirus pandemic has not made a major impact on the US business interest in solar. Off-site projects continue to be built and procured with only minor disruption whereas some few have postponed the installation completely for the next few months. As a solar installer, Staten Solar finds no issues with new projects, whereas obtaining/ issuing permits for the same were painfully rigorous.
